<intro>
The Jacksonville Jaguars have released receiver Torry Holt, defensive tackle Rob Meier and left tackle Tra Thomas.

The moves did not come to a surprise to the players and have been expected because head coach Jack Del Rio already personally told all three players that they would not be part of the team's rebuilding process and were no longer in the teams plans going forward.

Holt, who was a seven-time Pro Bowl selection with the Rams, caught 51 passes for 722 yards and zero touchdowns last season with the Jaguars. For his career, Holt has 920 career receptions for 13,382 yards and 74 touchdowns.

Thomas, who was a three-time Pro Bowler with the Eagles, started only three games for Jacksonville last season.

Meier, a 10-year NFL veteran spent most of last season on injured reserve, has 307 career tackles and ranks ninth in Jaguars history with 21 1/2 sacks.

    <intro>
The Jacksonville Jaguars are in second place in the AFC South, playing above 500 and alive for a playoff spot. Yet, their game against Buffalo on Sunday is blacked out in their broadcast area. Bills fans can view the game, whether they want to or not, but folks in Jacksonville and surrounding areas will have to be content with the radio broadcast.

Is this a sign of the struggling economy, or is it apathy in Jags land? Have they become too boring? Last season betting on who had the best chance of getting busted, or taking the high/low on time served was a diversion that helped overlook a season that was promised to be good, but turned out a bust; no pun intended, or maybe the intention was obvious.

Granted, a win over the Jets when some folks still believed they were any good has been the singular accomplishment of the Jaguars season this year. Still, the Cowboys haven’t been any good in eons and they could afford a new stadium with even more seats than the old one. The Chicago Bears haven’t had a quarterback since Sid Luckman donned a leather helmet, but that doesn’t stop people from sitting in the freezing cold and having their hearts broken on a seasonal basis. True, the Lions don’t have a prayer of selling out a game against the Browns, unless LeBron actually does don shoulder pads, but that franchise is as mortgaged as its home field.

I realize that it’s a game against the Bills, but do Jacksonville fans have anything better to do on Sunday? Face it; this is a stat padding affair for the Jags. There’s a slim chance that the Bills will rise to the occasion of their coach getting axed, shoulder some of the responsibility and try to make it better for the new guy, but that’s as unlikely as thinking they were going to win if Jauron didn’t get the boot.

The Jags are far from a glamour team. You could win bar bets by asking people to name five of their players. Outside of the most dedicated gridiron fanatic you may stump the bar and drink for free all night. They are the best team in Florida, but don’t get the exposure of the Dolphins and since they aren’t as awful as the Buccaneers they can’t even draw the morbidly curious who want to see when the ax will drop on their coaching staff.

It would appear that no one cares about the Jacksonville Jaguars which may explain why I drew the assignment of covering them. It was Editorials way of saying “Make something esoteric out of these guys, Smartass.” I which I could, but in reality the Jags are not the possible playoff team I mentioned in the lead paragraph. They will finish out the season in the quiet desperation that has marked their campaign thus far. Then, they will clear out their lockers, head home for the spring and come back to give us another mediocre run in 2010.

They need to get some felons back on their roster or covering these guys is going to remain a tough assignment.
<intro>
The Jacksonville Jaguars appear to have gone straight. No longer the most felonious team in football they have passed the crown to a Browns club that witnessed Braylon Edwards using his five hours of energy to beat up undersized friends of LeBron James after joining Donte Stallworth in a tribute to John Lee Hooker’s “One Bourbon, One Scotch and One Beer”.

While they haven’t reached Untouchables stage, the Jags are moving away from their gang that couldn’t shot straight mentality. The result is that the new kings of the underworld, the Cleveland Browns, are 0-4 and the reformed Jaguars are 2-2. Win number two came Sunday with a thorough pasting of the Tennessee Titans. The 17-37 score is proof that virtue has its rewards.

On Sunday the Jaguars travel to Seattle to play a Seahawks team that resembles an engine having lost its driving wheel with the absence of both Matt Hasselbeck and Walter Jones. Hasselbeck may return for the matchup, but recuperation may slow his performance.

On the other hand, the Jaguars have been anything but slow. After losing games one and two to the Colts and the Cards they rebounded by running up 31 on Houston and 37 on Tennessee. With the Seahawks reeling after their beating in Indianapolis the sky could be the limit for the Jaguars offense this Sunday.

While the reformed Jags are proving that virtue has its rewards, their erstwhile ways of last season have left them in possession of a favorable schedule that features the Jets and Pats as their toughest non divisional foes. A resurgent 49ers team could be tough, but the Bills and Browns should more than make up for it. They still have to deal with another go round against the Colts and a Titans team that might be seeking revenge, but advantageous play on Jacksonville’s part could see them make a run at a wild card spot. After all, Cincinnati and Denver could awaken any day now to the fact that they are playing over their heads.

Scoring big will have to be the Jags modus operandi since they are lacking defensively. While Tennessee have also struggled on that side of the line this season the Jacksonville passing game was precise in their two 30+ points wins. Their secret weapon in their offensive outbursts has been Mike Thomas. The rookie WR was unveiled against Houston and has been an early uncontained threat.

The addition of Thomas provides a deep option that has given the Jags the 10th ranked offense in the league. For a team that is accustomed to being on the Ten Most Wanted list this is a welcome change and leaves Coach Del Rio free to worry about Sunday’s game plan and not what to say to the press in way of explanation regarding another player arrest.

The Jags end their regular season with a visit to Cleveland to take on the new scourge of the NFL the Browns. Along with possibly vying for a playoff spot, they will not be the criminal element represented in the game. Virtue is its own reward and the reformed Jaguars are a fine example.
<intro>

And so it ends on this. A few games mean nothing this week, a few mean something and a few others mean everything. For your sakes I hope you have the games that mean something on TV in your viewing area. It would kind of suck to be stuck with the Bengals and Chiefs when you could be watching the Eagles and Cowboys. But the most important part of this weekend is of course the Lions' pursuit of imperfection.

A nation waits...

Raiders @ Buccaneers (-13)

Pick - The Bucs will win this game because it's at home and the Raiders are the perfect remedy for what ails a struggling team. But with how they have played lately, 13 points is like 100. But still. It's the Raiders. I'll take a good old fashioned Raymond James Stadium beatdown.

Lions @ Packers (-10.5)

Pick - Nobody deserves to go winless. As far as I can tell, nobody on the Lions is a reprehensible bag of crap like T.O. or Joey Porter, so this is really a sad case in sports history. But then again, everyone on the team is a millionaire, so sympathy has its limits. The Packers are possibly the best 5-10 team of all time and they will have no qualms about pounding their division rival (sorta).

Cowboys @ Eagles (-1.5)

Pick - The Cowboys are perpetually in an arm-wrestling duel with the Raiders to see who I despise more, but they are just superior to the Eagles. Somewhere in the depths of his soul Terrell Owens must actually want to win instead of just catch passes, so a sense of urgency would be a welcome sight to his teammates. The Boys win and sew up a playoff spot.

Giants @ Vikings (-7)

Pick - If this game were being played straight up with both teams having something to play for, the Giants would not be such underdogs. But they locked up the No. 1 seed in the NFC and have nothing to do but rest their regulars for their game in two weeks. The Vikings, on the other hand, need to win in order to make sure they get in and should be able to do so at home. I will be wearing my new Adrian Peterson jersey and pretending I'm him. But faster.

Bears @ Texans (-3)

Pick - OK, so the Texans have looked good lately and the Bears haven't for the most part, but with a playoff spot still possible I have to believe that the Bears are the favorites here. I mean, the Texans lost to the Raiders last week. I don't think it will take a quarter off of Urlacher's dome to decide this one.

Panthers (-3) @ Saints

Pick - This game is important for the Panthers, as a win secures a first-round bye. The Saints, however, have a habit of being inhospitable in New Orleans. When it comes down to it I think the Panthers should win, but I have it pretty tight, so I'll take the Saints to cover.

Rams @ Falcons (-14)

Pick - Before I get into my pick, let's go back about four months. At the end of August did you think you would see the Falcons a 14-point favorite against anyone? I didn't. Anyways, the Falcons are pretty good but they don't score enough to give 14 points. Falcons win. Rams cover.

Chiefs @ Bengals (-3)

Pick - I have to apologize to Tyler Thigpen. I doubt that he reads my stuff and if he does he probably isn't crying himself to sleep. But I made some jokes at his expense when he came in as the Chiefs starter and he has shut me up big-time. This guy can play and he is running towards a big payday either with the Chiefs or elsewhere. Chiefs win easily.

Titans @ Colts (-3)

Pick - This would be another great game if either had anything to play for. But alas they do not. The Titans clinched the No. 1 seed and the Colts are cemented in at No. 5. Neither team will play the regulars, so basically it will be like watching the Pro Bowl. I'll take the Colts because they're at home, I guess.

Browns @ Steelers (-10.5)

Pick - Had the Browns started Ken Dorsey again I would have laughed and then vomited all over my monitor. He should not be in the NFL, as he has the same pocket awareness and arm strength as I do. But savior (...) Bruce Gradkowski is getting the start so I'll take the Browns to cover in what is surely a Harikari move.

Dolphins @ Jets (-2.5)

Pick - Why would the Jets be favored? Because they're at home? I don't care if they are at home. They have played like hot garbage the last four or five weeks and now Favre apparently has a bum shoulder. I still don't know why the Dolphins are good, but I do know that they are. Dolphins win easy and Mangini gets a boot in the sphincter.

Patriots (-6) @ Bills

Pick - The Patriots need to win first of all to have a chance at getting into the dance. Some other crap has to happen as I wrote about in another column, but if they don't win it doesn't matter. The Bills are suddenly awful and the Pats should come through with the W.

Seahawks @ Cardinals (-6.5)

Pick - You could look at it and say that the game doesn't matter for the Cards, and that's true. However, seeing as how the have been insultingly terrible lately, I think they will try to show that they can still play heading into the playoffs. Their confidence can't exactly be real high after the last few weeks. Cardinals dominate.

Redskins @ 49ers (-3)

Pick - I like the way my guys are playing recently and I am really happy that Mike Singletary is going to be sticking around as coach (reportedly). Since neither team has playoff chances, I'll take my boys at home.

Broncos @ Chargers (-8)

Pick - The Broncos are an embarrassment, but so are the Chargers. The Chargers have some wins lately and are at home, so they are going to take the division is the most ridiculous of fashions. The Broncos will keep it within the spread, but the Chargers will win.

Power Bet

Jaguars @ Ravens (-12.5)

Pick - The Ravens are better and they have proven it all year, but they aren't an offensive powerhouse even with all their improvements on that side of the ball. The Jags have pride to play for, so they should keep it within the ridiculous spread.
